Song of Songs 1:1 Set Up
This single verse is our set up for this book. And it brings some controversy with it. Not from its writer, players or content but in how it is interpreted.
The Song of Songs is traditionally believed to be written by Solomon. I never doubted that or even thought it was in question. But my Bible Helps shared things with me that I had no clue about.
Why did I go to my Bible Helps you ask. Because I’m terrified by this book! I think this is becoming a consistent fear for me lately. However, Song of Songs is a very romantic and explicit depiction. I’m afraid I will miss the symbolism, so, I wanted to see it my Bible Helps would ‘help me out’ there. Now I’m even more concerned than before.
My helps tells me that there is disagreement on who wrote this book, but not the time period. Some say it was written FOR Solomon while others say BY Solomon. The story isn’t really about any of Solomon’s wives that we know specifically. And as Solomon had HUNDREDS of wives, the single focus on one love seems unlike his life.
Another issue up for debate is the purpose of this book. The Jewish people believe it is God speaking to His people; Israel. The Christians believe it is Jesus speaking to His bride; the church. Others say it is simply a collection of love poems.
All I know is that it is our next book in our journey through God’s word. I’m going to leave it in the Holy Spirit’s hand to help me understand this step on my journey. Shut-up fear! I’m marching on.
Father God, help me see You in this book. Help me not get lost in the language and images. Help me understand Your heart in this love story. Take me where You would on this journey.
