Luke 20:9-18 Under New Management

New tenants welcome

Jesus is still in the temple teaching the people. He is also confronting the religious leaders. Our story today is a very familiar one, as we have looked at it twice already. NO WAY have we exhausted what Jesus put into that story though.

When we looked at the story in Matthew we saw The Wicked Tenants in action. We watched as they schemed and plotted to get the vineyard for themselves. In Mark’s telling of this familiar parable we looked at the parallels between Israel’s history and the tenants. The Power of the Story left no doubt as to whom Jesus was talking about.

Today, I want to look at the changing of the tenants. In Luke’s recounting of this story, Jesus shocks His listeners by telling them that the landowner, “will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others” (verse 16a). Their response to Him was, “Surely not!” (verse 16b). Surely YES is what Jesus’ remarks to them clearly communicated. Read more »

Mark 12:1-12 The Power of the Story

Jezabel would have killed all God’s prophets, if she could have

Jesus is still in the temple today. He was just confronted by the chief priests and scribes about Whose authority He was ministering in. They didn’t get the answer they wanted and now Jesus is about to add more fuel to their fuming hearts.

When sharing Matthew’s account we put ourselves in the story as it was told. Today I want to live the story through the history of Israel instead. The chief priests and scribes actually listening to Jesus’ story that day recognized that He was speaking of them. We are going to look at exactly how the religious leaders behaved as these tenants. Matthew 21:33-46 The Wicked Tenants

The Master carefully prepared the vineyard

The Master carefully prepared the vineyard

We are continuing on with Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem. He is still addressing the chief priests who came to challenge His authority. Are you ready for round three? I think we all know who is going to win this one too.

Jesus uses another parable today in His battle. This one is about a landowner and his tenants. Jesus’ story starts out with the master of the house making preparations. The master didn’t simply lease out a piece of land and wait and see what the tenant would do with it, but he cultivated and tended a vineyard until it was productive. He dug ditches around the vineyard to create an irrigation system and a barrier to predators. He built a watchtower to protect it from any enemies. This was a carefully tended and established piece of property. A lot of planning and care went into making this vineyard profitable. Read more »
