Mark 8:11-13 Give Us a Sign

Is this the sign they wanted?

Is this the sign they wanted?

Today Jesus goes through a “face palm” encounter if I ever saw one. We join Him in the district of Dalmanutha on the Sea of Galilee. Surprise! Pharisees are there to question and argue with Him. Today it is: Give us a sign from Heaven so we will KNOW that You are who You say You are.

Seriously? Have they not witnessed the blind seeing? Have they not heard the demons cry out in fear AND call Him the Son of God? Have they not witnessed the lame walking? Have they not seen the dead raised, or at least heard the stories about it? Have they not listened to His teaching?

He teaches with such authority that He must be getting His information first hand. I’m pretty sure some of the Pharisees were present when He fed the 5,000. They seemed to be everywhere He was. So how was that bread anyway? I’m sure it was the best they ever ate, before or since. Read more »

Matthew 16:1-4 The Pharisees Want a Sign

Jesus has just come off the mountaintop and He and His disciples headed to another seaport town on the Sea of Galilee named Magadan. When I Googled this town, Daily Bible Study tells me it might actually be the same town Mary Magdalene came from. Upon arrival, they meet the Pharisees again. I wonder if this group is made up of the same men as Jesus has encountered before. Was there a group assigned to follow Him wherever He went, or is every encounter filled with new faces? Jesus’ short answer to them this time leads me to believe at least some of them were familiar faces and had asked the same question of Him before.

Matthew doesn’t tell us of any miracles or teaching Jesus did while in this area. We are only told of this one encounter while ashore. I wonder if that means that Jesus and His group just stopped off for a quick moment or if whatever else happened there was so routine that it simply didn’t get mentioned. Why did Jesus come to this town in the first place? Is it possible that Jesus stopped here for some alone time after His three day marathon meeting? Did the Pharisees appearance prompt Jesus’ departure from the Read more »

Matthew 12:38-42 Jesus and the Sign of Jonah

Seriously!?! How blind can you be?

Seriously!?! How blind can you be?

We are still with the same crowd as during the last couple of days in our study. It consists of Jesus, MANY people wanting healing (including a man who was blind and mute as a result of demonic oppression), Jesus’ disciples, a group of scheming Pharisees and some scribes. Jesus had left the temple a while ago because of the Pharisees’ accusations and their plotting behavior. Of course, even the Pharisees followed Him. A couple of days ago in our study we saw how the Pharisees made THE greatest mistake possible. They said that Jesus’ work was being accomplished by Beelzebul, the Prince of Demons. Jesus met that remark with righteous indignation. After a short pause, the Pharisees are ready to try again.

Jesus continued to address the Pharisees while He is also talking to the crowd. The crowd was so awed by the healing miracle, that they were finally wondering if Jesus was more than just a prophet or teacher, but promised The Messiah instead. Jesus told the group to look at His works and to judge for themselves, because good works can’t come from a bad source. Read more »
