John 12:1-8 A Precious Gift

A special gift for her Lord

We come to a story today that is told in every one of the gospel accounts. It is the story of the anointing of Jesus. We sat in the room with Jesus when Mary poured the oil of anointing in Matthew’s gospel. We looked at the hearts in attendance as love poured out in Mark’s telling. And we looked at the responses when forgiven little; loves little in Luke’s account. Today I want to look at the gift itself as we read John’s narrative.

By now I believe we are familiar with the story, but I’m going to do a quick recap in case someone decides to join us at this juncture first. Jesus and His disciples had been invited to a feast at the home of Simon. He is identified as a leper that Jesus had previously healed by Matthew and Mark. Luke tells us that the man was also a Pharisee. Luke is famous for getting deeper into some of the stories so he shared another aspect of that evening. Read more »

Mark 14:3-9 Love Poured Out

Tears of Joy mixing with Tears of Pain

Tears of Joy mixing with Tears of Pain

We join Jesus today in the house of Simon the leper, in the town of Bethany. It is dinner time and He will receive one of the sweetest gestures of love ever recorded.

This story made it into all four gospels. Jesus’ words at the end explain that fact clearly; “And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her” (verse 9). We looked at Matthew’s telling of Mary’s story in the blog titled “Oil of Anointing.” I invite you to go back and relive the story of that day.

Today I face the challenge of finding something more in our story. I’m trusting God to give us something new. Let’s see where the story takes us. I feel led to look at the hearts in the room.

This gathering is full of people and each person brings their heart full of expectations. To make it easier for me to follow, I’m going to make a list of attendees and then look at each of their behaviors and where their heart might be at. Read more »

Matthew 26:6-13 Oil of Anointing

In honor of His love

In honor of His love

My bible helps tell me that Matthew is sharing a story from earlier in the week with us in our reading today. In John’s gospel this event happened before Jesus rode into Jerusalem to start His final week, this side of the grave. We get to read about it now in Matthew’s account.

Jesus and His disciples are enjoying dinner with a man named Simon. Jesus healed Simon of leprosy earlier in His ministry. Simon is MORE than grateful to Jesus for his healing. Not only did Jesus restore Simon’s health, He restored Simon’s life back to Him. No way would he have been able to entertain guests in his previous condition. Read more »
